Katherine Reed, Associate Professor of Musicology, is a recent graduate of the University of Florida, where she earned a PhD in musicology. Reed holds her master’s degree in trombone performance from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. At CSUF she teaches courses in music history, popular music, and film music.

Dr. Reed’s research interests include musical semiotics, the use of pre-existing music in film, and British popular music, particularly David Bowie’s works of the 1970s. Her work has appeared in Music and the Moving Image, Popular Music and Society, and The Avid Listener. She has forthcoming chapters in Bloomsbury Handbook of Rock Research and Oxford Handbook of Music and Advertising. She contributed to the inaugural series of the Society for American Music’s Digital Lectures in American Music with a lecture on the murder ballad of Stagger LeeOpens in new window . With Reba Wissner, she is the coeditor of the forthcoming collection Music in Twin Peaks: Listen to the Sounds, to which she also contributed. Her current book project, Hooked to the Silver Screen: David Bowie and the Moving Image, was supported by a CSUF Innovative Research and Creative Activities Grant and a research fellowship at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame library and archives in Cleveland, Ohio.
